Chocolate Toxicity

Chocolate is only one of the common products used by people that contains caffeine, theobromine and theophylline which are methylated xanthines. Chocolate is attractive for some dogs to eat and not so attractive for cats.

Adverse events around chocolate ingestion are related to central nervous stimulation, cardiac muscle stimulation, relaxation of the bronchial muscles and kidney diuresis.

Similar products associated with xanthine derivative poisoning are caffeine tablets, guarana, cola, yerba mate and black/green teas, and human asthma medications.

Caffeine is quickly absorbed and reaches rapid toxic levels within 30-60 minutes. Caffeine passes the blood-brain barrier causing cerebral cortical stimulation, seizures, and muscle contraction of the heart causing altered rhythms, nausea, vomiting and sudden cardiac failure.

The amount of caffeine/theobromine varies in the different products and is dose dependent.

A strong cautionary is advised for these products for both dogs and cats.
